Before getting into the details, here's a quick list of what the different types of treatments are and the main uses of Window Shades.



Curtains: 

These are the cheapest Window Shades you can find. They consist of a simple cloth or plastic piece attached to the side of the window. They have no real aesthetic purpose, other than to block out light. They do well with all window sizes, although depending on how much light you really want to block, some curtains will tend to be less transparent than others. For dark windows, sheer fabrics are better because they will completely block out all light, and for lighter windows, blinds are a better choice.

Vertical Blinds: 

These offer some good benefits. They offer more control when open, and can add some decoration to any room. However, they can also be difficult to clean. They use fabric covered in multiple folds, and like curtains, they are made from various layers of fabric, with the largest layer of fabric in the bottom part and the bottommost folded fabric on top.

Blackout Window Shades: 

These offer no light control, but still give good privacy. They use a thick fabric to completely block out the light, and they can be closed tightly without leaving gaps. Blackout window treatments are best used in bedrooms or smaller rooms where you don't need as much light control.

Wood Window Shades: 

These provide good light control, and you can choose Window Shades that match your furniture or paint color. Wood is a natural material, so it does not need to be painted. Also, wood blinds are easier to clean than vinyl, although they may stain more easily. If you have a lot of stains on wood, however, you may not want to choose wood blinds over fabric or mesh window shades because they won't be able to protect the wood against stains.

Roman Shades: 

Roman Window Shades are great for areas where you want a more elegant effect. For these windows, you can get both horizontal and vertical slats. Horizontal slats roll up, while vertical ones roll down. You can get either plain or patterned fabrics, and they generally look more formal than roller shades or wood blinds. However, the main benefit to roman shades is that they provide better insulation than wood shutters, and they are easier to clean.
